Introducing our new partners

We’re excited to announce that our Spring/Summer collection will include cushion covers from a new group of artisans in Kyrgyzstan.

Since August last year, we’ve been working with a group of women living in the village of Arslanbob, an Uzbek village  in Southern Kyrgyzstan. Seasonal employment means that finding work in winter months is difficult, and there are even fewer opportunities for women. As sewing is something many women in the village have been doing all their lives, a natural way to offer employment was designing a range of ikat cushion covers made from traditional fabric, and working with these women to improve quality in order to sell the designs overseas. Alongside making these cushions, the women are being supported in business skills and training. The first collection will be on sale from May.

The cushion covers are made from ikat fabric woven in Margilan, Uzbekistan, and the finished item therefore represents both the countries we work in – and is a completely unique item!

Ethnic Uzbeks living in Kyrgyzstan have suffered much discrimination since the outbreak of ethnic violence in June 2010, and we are therefore delighted to be working with Uzbeks in the country to help to provide sustainable employment.

We can’t wait to start selling our latest range, and knowing that 50% of the profits raised goes back to supporting artisans in Central Asia makes it even more worth it!
